mission... The
Midnight Society is an organization focused on preserving the traditions
of folklore, mythology, and history, and finding out where those things intersect through storytelling, researching, investigating, and
participating in educational expeditions.
folklore... The organization started with the simple telling of classic ghost yarns and personal experiences. We believe that human beings need more than just the casual, "So...how's school?" conversation in order to meaningfully interact with one another. Also, storytelling is most certainly a form of art: each time a story is retold, the storyteller adds a bit of him/herself to the facts by emphasizing or de-emphasizing as that person sees fit. By telling stories and connecting on a personal level, we do our generation's duty of handing down folklore, and we also nurture the ideas of discussion and society.
excursions/viewings/investigations... There are vast resources on the subject of the paranormal, and we have only yet touched on a small amount of it. In recent times, we have increasingly focused our energies on the historical aspect of Richmond, and the stories it contains. On most of our Excursions, we visit historical areas, reputedly haunted sites, museums, and other places of interest. With Viewings, we learn more about popular presentations of the paranormal through movies. What we are primarily concerned with now, is building an online repository for all history and folklore items involving Richmond and its environs. We'd love to be responsible for maintaining this repository in such a way that if someone says "Hey, I think I heard a story about such-and-such place," they can go on our site and find all the pertinent information from various sources that we could find. This will be an ongoing project, and we'll need the help of anyone who can spare some time to do some research for us.
get involved... We meet sporadically, as opportunities present themselves. Right now, if you want to get involved, your best bet is to help out and do some research for our information repository. Whether you're a history buff, a horror film enthusiast, or just looking for something to do, contact us and ask us to give you a task. Don't forget to keep checking the Events page, too. Live far away? No problem. Start your own chapter.
